1 Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.
2 Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that he have mercy upon us.
3 Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
4 Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.
Amen. David understands that we come into the world in need of a Savior, for we can do no good thing unless our eyes are upon Jesus. When Peter walked on water, it was not in his ability to do so. It was the power of Jesus that enabled him to do so. When he took his eyes off of Jesus and looked back to the boat, what happened to him? The same that happens to us when we take our eyes off of Jesus. Many in our day have not learned this lesson. We think our wisdom is sufficient that we can enter heaven. No, we can do no good thing unless filled with the Holy Spirit. We must be born again of the Spirit. Then we must die daily. Daniel understood that if we wanted to serve God that he needed to stop in the middle of the day to pray that he would remain connected to God continually. He and King David knew that our fallen nature must be kept down, just as Paul said "I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway." 1 Cor.9:27.
When he says "body" he means his flesh which is fallen flesh. When filled with the Holy Spirit we are empowered to do what is right. Thus, it is the power of God that keeps us from crucifying Christ. We must keep our eyes upon Jesus.
"Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens." Ps. 123:1.
