"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God."  Ephesians 2:8.  We then know that grace is the power that saves. But, what is grace?

When we come into this world, we are born with a fallen nature and can do no good thing. We must be born again of the Spirit. Then the all important question is what must I do that I can be born again? The first and greatest of the commandments is to love the Lord our God with all of the heart. How can we come to the point of loving God with all we have and all we are? The Bible tells us: "We love Him, because He first loved us." 1 John 4:19. Then the answer must be that we must come to understand how much He truly loves us before we will love Him supremely. How can we learn of His great love for us? How do you know how much anyone loves you? We get to know them. How do we get to know God? Jesus said "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father." John 14:9. Then we need to spend time studying the life of Jesus that we might know of God's great love for each of us....while we were yet sinners. Yes, we do not deserve His love, for we have been at enmity (war) with Him. This is grace.

We can love those who love us, but it is impossible for us to love those who hurt us, unless we are born again of the Spirit. But, God did not wait for us to love Him, He proved His love for us when He let His innocent Son come to this dark spot in the universe to suffer and die for each of us while we were at war with Him. "But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." John 5:8. Again, this is grace, unmerited favor shown to the unrepentant sinner no matter what sins! Grace is the power that transforms sinners into saints.
